FREE PEOPLE | PORTLAND, ME

ACS built the Free People in Portland, Maine in the notable Thompson Block building in the city’s downtown. A truly beautiful, period building, the Thompson Block was designed by George M. Harding and built in 1867. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. A three and a half story sandstone and brownstone building with a slated mansard roof featuring an ornate façade comprised of iron supports and arches, its block-long presence is commanding on the street. As our team began work, we found charred timbers and stone in the basement dating back to the fire of 1866. We also discovered a rolling barn door that was ensconced in the existing framing of the building. We worked with the city of Portland to protect and salvage the door.

This is a specialty in which we are familiar. ACS has extensive experience working in and around older, historic buildings and we appreciate the special circumstances and utmost care that must be taken to pay tribute to these storied structures. We successfully balance meeting our client’s needs while also adhering to all requirements applicable to a historical space.  We are honored to have been a part of this project and to help Free People create its new home on Middle Street.
